An empty promise
Hangs suspended in the air
It will hover there until it's well forgotten
By it's owner
Leaving those with eager hearts
And anticipating eyes
Disappointed but forgiving
They will forgive and forgive
until they can't forget
They expect the world
Reaching into promises
Pulling out air
Coming up short of hope
I know exactly how it goes
You put your trust
Into those who place their promises
On a shelf to collect a lifetime of dust
Cobwebs develop
And your heart sinks
So low
That you don't want to retrieve it
